About the work

A wolf steps forward through an arched opening. Behind him, a red and gold sky meets distant mountains and green forests. In the foreground, a woman in a red dress faces him from the edge of the room.

His gaze anchors the encounter. Windows and columns create a measured structure around the two figures, while the divided floor draws the eye towards the space between them. The wolf’s presence can be read as a guardian, a challenge or a reflection of what the woman brings to the threshold.

Within Lilith’s Story

The Guardian of the Soul belongs to The Past, the first series of Lilith’s Story. The encounter places an inner question within an imagined architectural space, leaving its answer open to the viewer.

The guardian does not resolve the moment for her. His presence asks her to look, and to recognise what she sees.

The Guardian of the Soul

Within Lilith’s Story

Thresholds, enclosed spaces and encounters recur throughout The Past. Here, the relationship between the small human figure and the wolf gives those themes a physical presence. Discover how this work sits alongside the other paintings in the series.
