A staircase that reveals its steps, but withholds its destination.
About the work
A woman, seen from behind, stands within the sweeping curves of a staircase. The steps circle a dark interior. Above, a window creates a point of light, without revealing whether it marks an exit.
The architecture gives a direction, but no overview. The stairs behind the figure remain visible, while the way ahead disappears from view. Here, decision takes the form of a succession of steps rather than a single turning point. The destination remains outside the picture.
From the artist
“The staircase first took shape in my mind while I was still living in Tyrol. I felt that something was missing, without being able to name it. Moving to Vienna meant leaving a familiar life before I knew what would replace it.
After earlier paintings, this work marked the beginning of a visual language I wanted to pursue. Its connection to my own experience became clearer to me only afterwards.”
